Girls In The Windows by Ormond Gigli, 1960

”In 1960, while a construction crew dismantled a row of brownstones right across from my own brownstone studio on East 58th Street, I was inspired to, somehow immortalize those buildings. I had the vision of 43 women in formal dress adorning the windows of the skeletal facade. We had to work quickly to secure City permissions, arrange for models which included celebrities, the demolition supervisior’s wife (third floor, third from left), my own wife (second floor, far right), and also secure the Rolls Royce to be parked on the sidewalk. Careful planning was a necessity as the photography had to be accomplished during the workers’ lunch time! The day before the buildings were razed, the 43 women appeared in their finest attire, went into the buildings, climbed the old stairs, and took their places in the windows. I was set up on my fire escape across the streeet, directing the scene, with bullhorn in hand. Of course I was concerned for the Models’ safety, as some were daring enough to pose out on the crumbling sills. The photography came off as planned. What had seemed to some as too dangerous or difficult to accomplish, became my fantasy fulfilled, and my most memorable self - assigned photograph. It has been an international award winner ever since. Most professional photographers dream of having one signature picture they are known for. “Girls in The Windows” is mine.”

Adventure at Mountain Home Inn

Everything is Backwards

A while ago, I went with my friends to watch a few movies. We saw a commcercial for “The Kids Are All Right”. I was very excited to see this movie. Today, though, I was saw another commercial for it, and this time the rating was given. It was rated R. A Rated R movie is okay with me, but what really frustrates me is the lack of profanity and obscenity in this movie compared to other PG-13 movies. The only major difference between this and many other PG-13 movies is one major factor: Homosexuality.

The plot line of the movie focuses on reuniting a disconnected family. The two mothers parent two kids, a daughter and a son. The kids meet up with the donor to their existence (biological dad), whom slowly integrates himself as a member of the family and slowly the family becomes more connected. Nothing is at all profane, obscene, or even remotely violent about this movie. It is a comedic family film. It’s frustrating to know that this is rater R, exclusive to a very minimal audience, while violence, sex, and objectification is a major theme in many mainstream PG-13 movies.

It’s easy to say that homosexuality is a very taboo issue, but giving it a comparatively exclusive audience, gives that undertone that spiritual and family morals are much less acceptable than endorsing immoral and barbaric actions. “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”, “Fast and the Furious”, “Rollerball” - many PG-13 movies deal with unnecessary amounts of sex, violence and explosions. This really irks me how we are scared to advance at an intellectual level and rather focus on superficial, materialistic, and vain standards to prove ourself to society. The deeply indulged barbaric ideals really move society SEVERAL steps backwards, and it really frustrates me how we sacrifice intellect for this horribly barbaric mindset. What a world we live in. What a world.
